Core Principles Methodology

To assist the assessment process of the Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision (September 1997, revised October 2006), the Basel Committee has developed a methodology for use in compliance assessments. For each Core Principle, there is a set of criteria ("essential" and additional") against which the compliance is assessed. The Committee sees the formulation of this document as an iterative process, with refinements made as experience is gained. Developments of regulatory and supervisory standards and procedures will lead to additions and revisions. This version of the Methodology is the first to accompany the revised Core Principles of October 2006. This document will be updated periodically.
